Resource Consents

NRSBU’s intention is to operate our assets in a way that is sustainable with minimal social and environmental impact. We strive to have the right people and operating systems in place so that our processes are always compliant with resource consents and continuously improve to ensure optimisation.

NRSBU has a number of consents that cover:

  • Aberrational discharge

  • Discharge of treated wastewater to coastal marine area

  • Discharge of treated wastewater onto land via irrigation

  • Discharge of treated wastewater onto land via seepage from clay-lined ponds

  • Discharge of contaminants to air (primarily odour)

  • Application of biosolids to forestry land at Moturoa/Rabbit Island

  • Occupy coastal marine area and to use and maintain an existing pipe and diffuser outlet structure

Our main consent to operate the Bell Island Wastewater Treatment Plant was renewed in 2020 for a 20-year term.

Our consent to continue applying biosolids to forestry land at Moturoa/Rabbit Island was granted 14 April 2023.

The consents include conditions such as the requirement overflow screening and monitoring systems, quality of the treated wastewater, volumetric limitations, odour, condition assessment, waste sampling, data backups, and an annual hui for Te Tau Ihu iwi.
